While the Cordura name brought identity to this fabric, its variations are limitless and suited for your every need.

Cordura Fabric’s History and Manufacture

Originally created by the company Dupont, the first uses of the high-tensile fabric were for the military. It was initially classified as a rayon style of fabric, however its biggest use in World War II was for tire material! It was later on classified as a nylon fabric, and after 1977, it became dyeable.

Dying the fabric brought a new level to it. It allowed for the advancement of new products with this long-lasting fabric. The fabric lent itself to the creation of soft-sided luggage bags. It ended up taking over 40% of the bag market from that point forward. Now we see Cordura fabric in our backpacks and luggage but also in jackets and tactical gear with tiger stripe camouflage material. Surely, it has a become a staple fabric for the manufacture of baggage.

As earlier mentioned, this nylon fabric comes in various weights depending on the application. A 1000d Cordura, or 1000 denier fabric woven with polyurethane and nylon fibers makes it not only high tensile in its support, but also very water repellent. The higher the denier count, the thicker and more durable each strand woven in the fiber.

Cordura fabric by the yard as stated is usually a synthetic or synthetic blend of fibers woven in a tighter weave. These fibers, created through a chemical compound process that heightens its durability and strength. Therefore, it’s ideal for many projects.

Cordura Fabric & 1000 Denier Nylon

Cordura’s conception lead the way for Cordura-like fabrics to be born. Denier nylon, along with a polyurethane coating creates the base of a Cordura styled fabrics. 1000 denier nylon is less expensive as it’s Cordura brand counterpart, but just as high strength and long-lasting. Artists and manufacturers alike benefit from using fabrics that mimic Cordura.

It’s a no-brainer for use with applications that expose itself to harsh conditions or bad weather. While the nylon gives a stayability advantage above non-synthetic fabrics, the polyurethane coating helps with water repellent traits and makes this amazing fabric abrasion resistant.
