Fleece is a fuzzy and soft fabric used for sweaters, mittens, sweat shirts, jackets, blankets, hats and in any other applications where a warm, wool-like material is needed. It is much softer than wool, however, though it is lighter in weight and even warmer. Similar to corduroy or velvet (which are also two-sided pile material), Fleece fabric is a two-sided pile material, which means that both the front and back surface of the fabric sprouts a layer of cut fibers.
Polyester fleece is an extremely durable fabric that really holds in warmth exceptionally well. It is a favorite material in the cold winter months for this reason. It also resists moisture and dries quickly. Polyester fleece does not pill-bunch up into little balls after extended use, unlike many other synthetic wool textiles. This material is often seen worn by outdoor enthusiasts, hikers and backpackers both in their apparel as well as their outdoor gear.
