PPE, or personal protective equipment, is hard to come by these days. With states suggesting the use of masks by people in public areas, it can be tough to find the right mask for you. There are, however, some products like KN95 masks, mostly from Asian manufacturers that are available in marketplaces and online retailers. Of course, it’s difficult to discern which face covers are legitimate and which are not. Let’s talk about KN95 masks, what to look for, and how to use KN95 masks.
What are KN95 Masks?
KN95 masks are similar to N95 masks, except they are the Chinese standard for testing. The two disposable respirators are almost the same in every way. Like Korea, Australia/New Zealand, Europe, and Japan – there are various standards for mask effectiveness.
According to 3M’s mask comparison, “It is reasonable to consider China KN95, AS/NZ P2, Korea 1st Class, and Japan DS FFRs as “equivalent” to US NIOSH N95 and European FFP2 respirators, for filtering non-oil-based particles such as those resulting from wildfires, PM 2.5 air pollution, volcanic eruptions, or bioaerosols (e.g., viruses).”
3M, a trusted manufacturer of face masks, based its comparison on many factors, including filter performance, test agent, flow rate, inward leakage, inhalation resistance, etc.
How to Find a Good Quality KN95 Mask
A legitimate KN95 mask has layers of protection. What you may find with some counterfeit products is a lack of materials. Each mask should have a non-woven layer and meltblown cloth, among other layers, to assist with comfort and particle isolation.
Of course, since KN95 masks are manufactured under a Chinese standard, there are no claims that they are FDA approved, as that is an American agency. However, based on comparative studies, you’ll see that a legitimate KN95 mask is nearly equivalent to N95 masks if you know what to look for.

How to Use a Face Mask Properly
Although using a face mask seems simple, there is a proper and hygienic way to use them.
- Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soapy water to ensure your hands are clean before handling the mask.
- Hold the mask by the loops and position the mask under your chin with the nosepiece facing up.
- Pull the ear loops around your ear.
- Use two hands to mold the nose area around your nose to make sure there are no gaps.
- Check your fit by holding your hands over the mask. Breathe out sharply. If you feel air movement, you need to recheck your fit.
Mask Tip #1: Face masks will not form a proper seal on a bearded face. It’s a good idea to be cleanly shaven to reap the full health benefits of wearing a face mask.
Mask Tip #2: Face masks that fit adults won’t likely fit children properly.
