Centre-piece Art - going for the 'Wow Factor'

focal pointfocal point

How to create a jaw-dropping display with canvas art...

A well defined focal point is one of the most important aspects of a well designed room. Using canvas art to create an interesting focal point can harmonise and balance a room that may otherwise seem disorganised, uninviting and dull.

In many living rooms the main focal point is the television. Seating is arranged around it, it is given space so it can be viewed easily from all angles, and it's the most obvious and dominant item in the room. The problem is however, when the television is off it's simply an ugly, uninspiring lump of black or silver that adds nothing to your room.

So, as you walk into your living room what's the first thing you notice? If it's your new 42" flat screen television then you need a new, more inspiring and attractive centre-piece for your room...

First you need to shift the focus away from the television, this means moving your seating so it's not all positioned around it. Instead try to arrange your seating so that it focuses on the centre of the room, or (if you have one) the fireplace. Then if possible move the television to a corner of the room. Obviously it still needs to be clearly visible from the main seating areas, but try to position it so it has a less dominate presence.

Next identify potential wall space for your canvas art. Above the sofa, and above the fireplace are obvious spaces, but if you have any other bare expanses of wall then consider those too. If wall space is limited then go for a single canvas print, as large as possible. If you have a large room with plenty of available wall space then choose two, three or more canvases that compliment each other. Always try to hang the most interesting piece in the most central point (usually above the fireplace or sofa).

Displayed centrally as the focus of the room (instead of the television) canvas art can create a real sense of style, warmth and comfort. It also adds interest and becomes a real conversation piece for your family, friends and visitors. Displayed above the fireplace or sofa, a large piece of fashionable canvas art makes a bold statement about your personal style, and moves the focus away from the dull black box now sat alone in the corner...
